Why 'Kya Kaise'?

When people get to know about 'Kya Kaise,' the first reaction is always "It's a great initiative and there is definitely a need for something like this." But then the questions come "Why are you doing this? Do you make any money by doing this? What do you stand to gain by investing so much effort?”

The truth is that when I quit my job a year ago, I didn’t know I was going to be starting a YouTube channel. All I knew was that my mother did not even have an email account of her own. I was a Digital marketer and my parents did not even know how to come online and do a skype call. If I wanted to write an email to my mother, I had to send the message to my father’s email account.

I wanted to bridge this ‘Digital Divide’ and despite staying far away from my parents, I wanted to teach them about the internet. I wanted them to experience all the wonderful things we do online and sometimes take for granted. In just a few years, Email, online video, chatting, Facebook and twitter have changed our lives and how we communicate with each other!

We have become used-to the internet and so dependent on it that it’s almost impossible to imagine the world, without it.

But even today, only about 10% of India is online. My parents are part of this ‘connected’ 10%... educated, with a computer and broadband connectivity at home… yet they knew so little about the internet. I thought there may be many others like them, who can be reached via the internet in a low-cost way and I started ‘Kya Kaise.’

In December 2012, only 120 million people were online out of a population of roughly 1.2 billion people. A McKinsey Global Institute Report estimates that more than 330 million people will be online by 2015. Read the McKinsey Report on India's Internet Opportunity here

How will these people, who will be coming online for the first time know what to do? How to navigate the internet and how to do the things that are ‘second nature’ to us? Will they learn by themselves? Will these things be taught in schools? Will they access the internet from PCs, tablets or mobiles? The answers will unfold with time and we can all have our own predictions.

One thing is sure, a large mass of humanity is going to come online for the first time in history and they will want to consume content in their own language.

Now let’s come to the question Why ‘Kya Kaise?’

‘Kya Kaise’ is an attempt at sharing my knowledge with those who are curious and those who want to learn about the internet today to carve a better tomorrow for themselves.

'क्या कैसे' क्यूँ?

जब लोगों को ‘क्या कैसे’ के बारे में पता चलता है, तो पहली प्रतिक्रिया हमेशा यह होती है "बहुत अच्छी पहल है ओर इसकी बहुत ज़रुरत है।" पर इसके बाद हमेशा सवाल आते हैं "क्यूँ कर रही हो? क्या इसमें तुम पैसे कमाती हो? इससे तुम्हे क्या लाभ होता है?"

सच तो यह है की जब मैंने अपनी नौकरी पिछले साल छोड़ी, तो मुझे नहीं पता था की मैं एक यूट्यूब चैनल शुरू करूंगी।

मुझे यह पता था की मेरी मम्मी के पास ईमेल अकाउंट भी नहीं है…मैं डिजिटल मार्केटिंग एक्सपर्ट थी पर मेरे घर में मम्मी-पापा को स्काइप तक प्रयोग नहीं करना आता था…मम्मी को ईमेल लिखनी हो तो पापा के अकाउंट पर भेजनी पड़ती थी।

मैं अपने मम्मी-पापा से दूर रहते हुए, उन्हें इन्टरनेट के बारे में बताना चाहती थी ताकि वोह दोनों भी इन्टरनेट पर उन सब चीज़ों को कर सकें जो हम करते हैं… वोह सब चीज़ें जिन्हें हम रोज़ इस्तेमाल करते हैं ओर उनके बारे में सोचते तक नहीं। ईमेल, विडियो, चैटिंग, फेसबुक, ट्विटर ने तो मानो हमारी ज़िन्दगी बदल दी है पिछले कुछ सालों में।

हम इतने निर्भर हो गए हैं इन्टरनेट पर की इसके बिना ज़िन्दगी अकाल्पनिक है।

पर आज भी भारत में केवल १०% लोगों के पास इन्टरनेट है. मेरे मम्मी-पापा इसी १०% में हैं… पढ़े लिखे, घर में कंप्यूटर ओर इन्टरनेट होने के बाद भी उन्हें इन्टरनेट की जानकारी बहुत कम थी। मुझे लगा की इन्टरनेट के माध्यम से ही, कम लगत में इन लोगों तक पहुँच कर इन्हें सिखाया जा सकता है ओर मैंने 'क्या कैसे' शुरू किया।

दिसम्बर २०१२ में, भारत की १२० करोड़ की जनसँख्या में केवल १२ करोड़ लोगों के पास इन्टरनेट था। मैक्किन्सेय ग्लोबल इंस्टिट्यूट की एक रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, साल २०१५ तक भारत में ३३ करोड़ से अधिक लोगों के पास इन्टरनेट होगा।

रिपोर्ट यहाँ पढ़िए

जो पहली बार इन्टरनेट पर आयेंगे, उन्हें कैसे पता चलेगा की इन्टरनेट पर चीज़ें कैसे करते हैं? क्या वोह खुद से सीखेंगे या परिवार ओर दोस्तों से? क्या यह सब चीज़ें स्कूल में सिखाई जाएँगी? क्या यह लोग पीसी से इन्टरनेट सर्फ करेंगे या मोबाइल ओर टैबलेट से? इन सवालों  के जवाब आज पता नहीं सिर्फ अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है।

एक बात तय है, वोह यह की इन्टरनेट पर बहुत सारे लोग आने वाले हैं ओर वोह अपनी भाषा में इन्टरनेट सर्फ करना चाहेंगे।

अब आते हैं इस सवाल पर की 'क्या कैसे' क्यूँ? 'क्या कैसे' एक छोटी सी कोशिश है. अपना ज्ञान बांटने की ओर उन लोगों की मदद करने की जिनमें जिज्ञासा है ओर जो इन्टरनेट  से आज सीख कर, अपना कल बेहतर करना चाहते हैं।
